Repeat by Cath Campbell

But they should have known
it was only a matter of time
before the idea bloomed again,

this last disturbance of bullets
hitting the cool school corridors,
killing the heat of the day.

They should have known a gun
is an unwanted gift from the dead
to urge a cracked heart to act –

and if prayer is the only answer,
they need to know which rough god
it is to whom they kneel and pray.
